"I debated the medium hard case vs a large. But one of the airlines on our trip limited the bag weight to 44 pounds. So I went with the medium. I am so glad I did.. I never had a hard case but it held more than the soft bag, and it was very roomy. And the expander option is terrific. "This is my fourth bag from Briggs & Riley and while it is a very fine bag, it doesn't give me the same high-quality feel as my earlier bags (all different sizes, they are still great). The lock jams quite a bit and the lining feels loose in some places and too stiff in others."

The expanders tend to collapse a little while packing due to the weight of the other side of the suitcase clam shell.
